The local nonprofit Heaps of Jeeps has named Knox County Sheriff Doug Vantlin its 2026 First Responder of the Year.
Each year, Heaps of Jeeps hosts a two-day festival in Vincennes centered around Jeep enthusiasts, featuring vehicle shows, organized rides, live music, and other activities. This year’s event is scheduled for June 19 and 20 at Highland Woods. Organizers note the festival is open to the public and not limited to Jeep owners.
Heaps of Jeeps raises money to support first responders in Knox County and Lawrence County, Illinois. As part of its annual festival, the organization accepts nominations for its First Responder of the Year Award. This year, that honor goes to Sheriff Vantlin.
In announcing the award, organizers thanked Vantlin for his leadership, service, and commitment to the community. They also recognized his support of Heaps of Jeeps during his eight years as sheriff, saying he has helped ensure the festival remains a safe and successful event.
Vantlin will be formally presented with the award during opening-night ceremonies on Friday, June 19, when first responders are recognized at the festival. The First Responder of the Year Award is sponsored by Burkhart Insurance.
Sheriff Vantlin is set to retire at the end of the year.
